Sweden's news in English

The mass media in English is very limited in Sweden. There is no printed press in English. As far as I know, there are four online news media, none of which is really satisfactory.

The most famous is probably The Local, an online newspaper whose editorial policy appears to be the one of tabloids. On a rare occasion, however, it publishes interesting articles. Here's an interview of the founder of The Local, an English man, about how The Local was launched in April of 2004.

SR International, a radio channel in Sweden, has a website with Sweden's news in English. The choice of news topics is more intellectual than The Local, but each article is very short and rather dull, lacking in deep analysis. You can listen online to its 30-minute radio program broadcast each weekday, but it's rather dull, too.

Scandinavia Now offers business news from Sweden and other Nordic countries.

Finally, Stockholm News aims to provide Swedish news in English, with focus on Stockholm. Compared to the other three news website, however, the number of articles per day is very small. Sweden Ombudsman may be a useful webpage to learn about life in Sweden.

For what's on in Stockholm in terms of nightclubs and art exhibitions, check out Kalendarium.se. Click "TRANSLATE EN" at the top of the page. You'll then see the website translated into English thanks to Google's automatic translation system. Of course, the translation is not perfect, but it's understandable probably due to the grammatical similarity between English and Swedish.

I wish Stockholm New would be back very soon.
